Varicose veins are not only unsightly, but they can also be painful and lead to blood clots and skin ulcers or sores. Luckily, microphlebectomy can remove most large surface varicose veins with minimal discomfort and recovery time.
What is Microphlebectomy?
This is an outpatient procedure where tiny openings are made in the skin. The diseased veins are removed through these tiny micro-incisions. This procedure is a great improvement over the more invasive vein stripping done with long incisions. Microphlebectomy uses only a local anesthetic. The openings require no stitches and heal quickly.
Since the large surface veins that are removed with microphlebectomy are often fed by smaller saphenous veins, microphlebectomy may be combined with an endovenous laser treatment to prevent the reappearance of the varicose veins.
What Should I Expect During This Procedure?
Our team will let you know before the procedure if any changes need to be made to medications you are taking. As for the actual procedure, it is done in the comfort of our office. The area being treated will be numbed with a local anesthetic.
After cleaning the skin that is being treated, a small series of micro-incisions is made close to the varicose vein. A special tool is then inserted under the skin and the vein is removed through the small openings.
What Happens After a Microphlebectomy Procedure?
No stitches are needed with microphlebectomy because the micro-incisions are so small. Once completed, small bandages are applied to the area and the leg is wrapped in a compression wrap or stocking. Compression wraps or stockings will likely need to be worn for several weeks after the procedure to allow for healing and to prevent complications.
After the first 24 hours, you can go about your normal, daily life. Only strenuous activities will need to be avoided for about two weeks. A follow-up visit may be recommended after the procedure. Some additional procedures or treatments may be required. Long-term success of microphlebectomy, however, is seen with most patients.
